Bayer Crop Science Philippines, UP Los Baños Sign Cooperation Agreement

United by a shared goal to improve the agricultural sector in the Philippines and to advance innovative, science-based agricultural solutions that can help farmers protect their harvest and improve food quality, Bayer Crop Science Philippines Inc. and the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) have inked an academe-industry cooperation agreement aimed towards developing and strengthening collaborative research, internship, and training activities.

"At Bayer, we firmly believe that leveraging on innovation deeply rooted on science and proven real-world applications, such as novel seeds and traits, crop protection, digital, and agronomic solutions, will be key in helping our farmers adapt to the ever-complex conditions in growing our food. This collaboration with the University of the Philippines – Los Baños (UPLB) signifies the right synergy of strengths. Indeed, our shared commitment to innovation based on science and the good of agriculture are our common ground where we stand firm in helping Philippine agriculture respond to the changing environment" says Allan Vellila, Head of the Bayer Agronomic Technology Center Southeast Asia (ATC-SEA), representing Bayer Crop Science Philippines Inc.

The agreement opens multiple avenues for collaboration such as joint research programs and study papers on key topics and issues affecting the agricultural industry and allows for sharing of technical expertise when necessary. The agreement also enables opportunities for UPLB students to put their technical knowledge of agriculture and food science into practice, helping them to acquire a working knowledge of the technical and human aspects of management of food and agriculture projects and/or activities; as well as learn new knowledge and techniques and gain experience from farm/field/plant operations.

Bayer Crop Science Philippines was represented by Bayer ATC-SEA Head Allan Velilla and Regulatory Affairs Manager Carlo Cabral, with UPLB by Chancellor Jose V. Camacho along with CAFS Associate Dean Christine Adiova, College Secretary Veneranda Magpantay, and Institute of Weed Science, Entomology, and Path Pathology (IWEP) Director Cecilia Medina.

Bayer Crop Science underscored the potential of regenerative practices and solutions in driving farmer productivity and environmental sustainability during the 56th Pest Management Council of the Philippines (PMCP) Anniversary and Scientific Conference held in Caticlan, Boracay. Bayer CropScience joined the 17th National Rice Technology Forum (NRTF) held in Brgy. Sto. Domingo, Nueva Ecija from March 19 to 21, 2024 along with different agrochemical, seeds, and technology providers in the country,

The NRTF, headed by the Rice Board, is a biannual, nationwide event where different stakeholders in the agriculture industry showcase their hybrid rice seeds and their crop protection products that farmers can adopt in their farming business. 

Emmanuel Serame, Key Accounts Executive in North and Central Luzon, led the Bayer team in welcoming farmers and other stakeholders at the Arize® Field Walkthrough where different Arize® hybrids were featured. “Dito sa Bayer showcase natin, makikita [niyo] ang aming mga varieties: ang Arize® AZ 7888, HaBilis Plus, at Bigante™ Plus. Kapag bumisita sa field, malalapitan ng mga farmer ang mga variety natin at makikita nila yung mismong butil.”

The Southeast Asian Regional for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) together with Bayer Crop Science in the Philippines held the “20 Years and Onward: Advancing the Future of Philippine Yellow Corn” Forum, marking the two decades of use of Bt corn, or more locally known as yellow corn, after its first commercial planting in 2003. The event was held on 8 February 2024 at the Makati Diamond Residences and online via Zoom. 

More than 160 attendees from public and private sectors attended the forum onsite and online, including from the academe, industry, business chambers, farmer groups, nongovernmental organizations, and the government. The forum looked back at key enabling policies as well as the situation of yellow corn across the value chain. 

Director Gerald Glenn Panganiban of the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI) highlighted in his opening message that the Philippines was among the first countries in Asia to adopt yellow corn, a genetically modified (GM) crop, and implement a regulatory framework on genetically engineered crops.
