Genesis Aguilar, Bayer Crop Science Territory Manager in Isabela, received the Plaque of Recognition on behalf of Bayer Crop Science Philippines for achieving the highest-yielding corn variety in the Cordon Wet Season Corn Derby.
Bayer’s DEKALB® 8282S emerged as the top yielding hybrid at the wet season corn derby in Cordon, Isabela last May 23 – September 13, 2024, winning the prestigious title of Highest Yielding Corn Variety. DK 8282S outperformed other corn hybrids from 5 more seed companies that joined the derby. This reaffirms the hybrid’s position as a top choice for farmers who seek to maximize productivity even under diverse and challenging growing conditions.
One of the standout techniques featured in the contest was double row planting – a requirement set by the Department of Agriculture in Cordon, Isabela even before the start of crop establishment (80 cm x 30 cm furrow distance; 20 cm hill distance). There were two categories – hilly and broad plains, both of which have two sub-categories, implementing farmer practice and double row planting. In both categories, DK 8282S yielded the most compared to other hybrids- 10.37 mt/ha in the broad plain area and 9.73 mt/ha in the hilly area.

“The double row technology implemented in the corn derby is a high-density type of planting with 90,000 plants per hectare (pph) population. Provided that proper fertilization and other agronomic recommendations are implemented, DK 8282S is well suitable for this type of method since we recommend a seed population between 83,000 – 90,000 pph. This is one advantage of DK 8282S versus other hybrids, giving farmers additional yield even at high population density planting”, says Jonel Carberto, Market Development Lead (PH) of Bayer Crop Science.
The double row planting technique demonstrated significant promise in increasing corn yields, as evident on the result of the derby. By planting seeds in two closely spaced rows, it optimizes land use and enhances crop performance in a variety of conditions. Double row planting increases seed density per hectare, making more efficient use of available land, especially in areas where space is at a premium. The technique also improves moisture retention, which is especially crucial in hilly areas like Cordon.
The results from the recent corn derby offer valuable insights for farmers in Cordon, Isabela, and the broader agricultural community. The combination of DK 8282S and double row planting provides a compelling roadmap for increasing corn production across the region. As more farmers embrace these advancements, the future of corn production in Cordon looks not only promising but poised for a sustained growth and success.
