Corn farmer association in Camarines Norte hails DEKALB® 9118S as top hybrid in varietal trial

The DEKALB® hybrid known for its tagline “Panalo sa Kita, Panalo sa Proteksyon” bagged the first place in Camarines Norte’s Varietal Trial that took place in Brgy. Bakiad, Labo, Camarines Norte. DEKALB® 9118S took home the first place in two categories-- Shelling Recovery at 84% and Return on Investment (ROI) at 80.21%, which was the competition’s main basis for it to be declared as the best variety and practice. In addition, the computed yield (dried) is at 11.68 MT (metric tons). DK9118S bested two other competitor brands that participated in the varietal trial, all of which were planted last March 25, 2022. According to the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG), although a similar event was held before, this was the first time that three big companies, including Bayer’s DEKALB®, participated in the competition.

UNLAD sponsored the event, along with the support of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist. UNLAD Magsasaka Maissagana Farmers Association, or simply known as UNLAD, is an organization composed of corn farmers from Labo, Vinzons, Daet, Mercedes, and Basud, Camarines Norte. The varietal trial aims to promote the best varieties as well as practices that farmers can adopt for their farms and ultimately, increase their yield and income.

“This is a big win for Bayer CropScience, Inc. since our brand presence for DEKALB in Camarines Norte was low in the past. Through the varietal trials in [the province], we were able to showcase the value added by our hybrid, DK9118S, to corn farming,” says John Vince Cruz, Bayer’s Grower Marketing Manager for Corn. Regional Sales Manager Jose Razal shares the company’s triumph with the corn farmers of Camarines Norte. “This serves as a motivation for us to develop and grow the corn market and become one of the leading companies in corn business in the area. More importantly, winning the varietal trial is a win for corn farmers in the region and a call to find and use better corn seeds with VTDoublePRO® technology which will guarantee them a higher yield,” says Razal.

Cruz adds that with the results of the varietal trials, the farmers in the community are more confident in choosing DEKALB®. “As we build our brand in the province, aside from the below the line activities we are doing, we now have ambassadors or influencers who will help us increase our brand presence, and convince other farmers to try our products,” says Cruz.

“Sa lahat po ng mga corn farmers at plano mag-[venture] into corn business, huwag na po tayo mag dalawang isip pa para umani ng maganda at hindi nag-[aalala] na atakihin ng peste, lalo na ng fall army worm. Mag DEKALB na po tayo. Sa DEKALB, ang ani at kita ay sigurado,” says Razal. Cruz also encourages the corn farmers to continue engaging with the company by attending its Bayer Learning Centers (BLC) and other demand generating activities, in order to keep up with the latest agronomic practices and technologies in (corn) farming so that they may be able to maximize the value that the DEKALB® hybrids can offer. “Help us influence other farmers to make the right choices; for they can count on DEKALB® to deliver superior performance that delivers top results, season after season,” he adds.

Just last April, DEKALB® 8282S won in Bicol Region’s Corn Derby, outperforming 4 hybrid corn varieties from other hybrid corn companies in the region. This, along with the recent win of DEKALB® 9118S, is a testament that DEKALB hybrids are of superior quality that assures farmers a stable yield, not only in Region 5, but also across the country.
