Bayer Crop Science’s DEKALB® hybrids took home four awards at the recently concluded Provincial Hybrid Yellow Corn Derby Production in Camarines Norte – a testament that corn farmers can depend on the quality and yield performance of DEKALB® hybrids.
DEKALB® 8282S placed 1st in Yield (9.76 tons/ha) and ROI categories (144.95%), as well as 2nd place in Shelling Recovery Category (80%). Another DEKALB® hybrid, DEKALB® 9118S, bagged the 3rd place for Shelling Recovery (79%). The awarding took place on June 6, 2023 in Barangay Dogongan, Daet, Camarines Norte and was spearheaded by former Vice Governor Jonah Pimentel.
Six companies, with two varieties each, participated in the derby from February 9 to June 6, 2023. Within those four months, twelve corn hybrids were naturally tested against pest and weather.
“High rainfall during the duration of the derby caused diseases in other varieties. The Fall Armyworm was also present during the early stages up until their reproductive stage,” says Jake Baldoza, Senior Territory Manager in the area.
DEKALB®’s protection and tolerance against above-ground pests, specifically Fall Armyworm (FAW), impressed the corn farmers in the region. Its capability to recuperate from heavy infestation even without pesticide application is a strong suit of the 8282S and 9118S, thanks to its VTDoublePRO® RIB Complete® traits
“VTDOUBLEPRO® RIB Complete® corn blend contains dual modes of action for maximum protection against above-ground pests, such as the Asian Corn Borer and Fall Armyworm. The two proteins present in VTDoublePRO® bind to the midgut of the pests when they eat off the corn, which are then lethal for them,” says John Vince Cruz, DEKALB® Brand Portfolio Manager.
Other observations and comments from the farmers include good grain color; heavier and higher shelling recovery than other varieties; and excellent resistance against foliar diseases, displaying greener leaves even during full maturity.

“This win is important for Bayer because it highlights DEKALB®’s superior quality and the company’s capability to excel in any field of agriculture. ‘To see is to believe,’ is what the Filipino farmers always say. Our consistent wins in these derbies, organized by the Department of Agriculture, will further solidify our reputation, and will give farmers more confidence to plant DEKALB® seeds in their corn fields,” Business Unit Head for Corn Romar Dammay says.
Dammay also discusses DEKALB®’s edge over its competitors in the market.
“DEKALB® varieties have built-in resistance against FAW, whose infestation is considered as one of the hardest to control in corn farming. Second, all DEKALB® varieties are glyphosate-ready so farmers won’t have to worry that their yield will be affected when they spray herbicide on their crop,” says Dammay. “Bayer’s hybrid corn varieties undergo rigorous trials conducted by breeders and researchers,” he adds. Lastly and most importantly, Dammay stresses the availability of Bayer field colleagues and their role in guiding corn farmers with whatever help they need.
Last August of 2022, DEKALB® also emerged as the top corn hybrid in Camarines Norte’s varietal trial with its hybrid, DEKALB® 9118S. Read the story here.
