Bayer Crop Science spotlights DEKALB® hybrid in the 6th Bicol Agri Summit

Bayer CropScience joined the 6th Bicol Agri Summit held in Brgy. Cadlan, Pili, Camarines Sur from July 27 to July 29, 2023 to showcase Bayer products and crop innovations in the region. DEKALB®—Bayer’s hybrid corn technology— took the spotlight, specifically its BLOCKBUSTER hybrid, DEKALB® 8282S.  DK 8282S recently won in the 2023 Provincial Yellow Corn Derby held in Brgy. Dogongan, Daet, Camarines Norte where it was awarded 1st place in Yield (9.76 tons/ha) and ROI (144.95%) categories, as well as 2nd place in Shelling Recovery category (80%).

DEKALB® 8282S is one of Bayer’s newest corn hybrids. Dubbed as BLOCKBUSTER sa ANI at KITA, DK 8282S has protection and tolerance against above-ground pests, specifically Fall Armyworm (FAW). As a BLOCKBUSTER variety, DK 8282S is capable of withstanding heavy infestation of FAW and other above-ground pests even without using pesticides, thanks to its VTDoublePRO® RIB Complete® technology.

VTDoublePRO® RIB Complete® corn blend contains dual modes of action for maximum protection against above-ground pests. The two proteins present in VTDoublePRO®, which are lethal to the pests, bind to their midgut when they eat off the corn.

Having a premium quality corn hybrid, such as DK 8282S, available to the corn farmers in Bicol makes Roland Bilon, Bayer’s Campaign Activation Manager for DEKALB®, optimistic for the corn industry in the region.

“As a science-based and innovative company, Bayer continuously research for the best solution and technologies that we can offer to our stakeholders. DEKALB® 8282S, our BLOCKBUSTER hybrid, is a good testament to that. This hybrid has won several corn derbies in Luzon and most recently in Bicol, in terms of yield and return on investment,” says Bilon.

Importance of Joining Agri Summits

Joining government-led events like Agri-summits enables Bayer to collaborate with industry leaders and people who share similar interest in agriculture. Erica Dinulos, Bayer CropScience Regional Sales Manager, believes so.

“Agri-summits are venue that bring together farmers, suppliers, academes, private organizations, and the public sector in one place for a common goal, that is to drive a more sustainable and innovating agriculture industry. Participation in these kinds of activities not only showcases our products, like DEKALB® 8282S, and innovative digital platforms, but also shows our collaboration to forge a strong cross-partnership amongst agricultural stakeholders,” says Dinulos.

Bayer Venture Lead for Digital Farming Solutions Angela Vina De Guzman reinforced that participating in the summit is a good way to get feedback from farmers and the company’s channel partners about potential tools and solutions that Bayer is building for them.  “We learn a lot from their clarifications and questions, and throughout the entire interaction," she adds.

As for Bayer, Dinulos is hopeful not just for the corn business but for the region’s agriculture sector in general. “Thanks to the company’s on-going developments on corn and rice seed pipelines, crop protection innovations, and progress in digital innovations, we are able to provide an integrated set of solutions for our stakeholders. Bicol farmers can expect unceasing topnotch quality products that will enable them to produce more with less.”

The 6th installment of Bicol Agri Summit was an initiative of Camarines Sur Chamber of Commerce and Industry and was participated by more than 500 farmers across the region.
